The Artist
Juan Carlos is a independent artist who has worked in theater, film and television alongside industry professionals and independent creators. He is also an avid photographer, taking pictures as a hobby and as a profession. He holds a degree in Cinema from San Francisco State University's College of Creative Arts.
As an undergraduate student, he took extensive courses in film history, film theory, film analysis and cinematography as well as digital photography. In addition to his analytical work, he produced, edited and directed award-winning student projects, and performed journalistic work and web designing for the school's cinema website. He also became a published film critic, reviewing films for a Latino newspaper in the California Central Valley. Furthermore, he wrote a screenplay that garnered him a scholarship to attend a screenwriting seminar that was co-sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Script Magazine.
After graduating from the College of Creative Arts at San Francisco State, he attended CSU Summer Arts, a media arts festival, where he worked alongside industry professionals--first as a student and then as a professional artist, assisting other students. This lead him to work on various projects and in different capacities--such as an assistant director (to a theater production), a production coordinator (for a 35mm short film), a production assistant and assistant editor (to a 24p digital short film), co-editor of a TV comedy skit, and co-editor of a short digital film. In addition, he co-animated and co-produced an animation project that went on to become an Animation Finalist at the 2002 CSU Media Arts Festival.

After Summer Arts, he went on to serve as editor and associate producer of a short documentary that aired on public access television in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the same time, he went on to establish Filmunition Studios--from where he freelanced as a a professional photographer, web-designer, video producer and social media consultant for various organizations, businesses and independent projects.
In 2009 he started work on his first feature-length documentary film, The Fight for Water, which he independently produced. It was released in 2012 to film festivals around the U.S. and the world. The film received various nominations, including Best Documentary and Runner-Up awards from various film festivals throughout its run. In addition, the film went on to have screenings at public schools, libraries, colleges, universities and community centers throughout the nation before its world-wide release on DVD and online streaming services in 2014 and 2015.
